Thanks you for showing interest in the ALL NEW Innisfail Nordic Ski Club. I am very excited to say that tings are moving smoothly, and I wanted to let all of you know where we are with the process of creating the new club. For those of you who maybe haven’t heard, we are re-creating the Innisfail Cross Country Ski Club! Only this time it will be bigger and better!

Here’s what we have accomplished so far:

Ski Terrain:

So far we have been given permission to use the Innisfail Golf Course as our main skiing area. This will be track set, and access will be from the Innisfail downhill ski club. We are also working on gaining access to the Napoleon Lake Trails. There is a lump of trees to the East and to the West of the Centennial Park parking lot that could potentially be track set, as well as a loop going all the way around the lake. We’ll have more on where we will be track setting in the next newsletter.

Track Setter & Snowmobile:

We have gained access to the old track setter that was in use when the club existed in the past, and I’ve been told that it’s a really nice piece of equipment! At the moment we are kind of a wagon without a horse, as we do not have a snowmobile to pull the track setter. If anyone knows of a snowmobile that could be used by the club, or one for a bargain price, please feel free to let me know! I will provide contact info at the bottom of this newsletter.

Cross Country Alberta:

Innisfail Nordic is associated with Cross Country Alberta! Basically, this means that for a small fee, we get insurance as well as help fundraising, and holding any events that we may want to hold. I believe they will help us get anyone certified to be instructors if the need is there.

Website & Facebook:

Innisfail Nordic has a website and we also have a facebook group. The website is www.innisfailnordic.com and the facebook group is https://www.facebook.com/groups/179144002271801/

For the most part, news will be channelled through the Newsletter, but the website will eventually have a schedule of events, waivers, some resources on different kinds of wax and other useful stuff like that! The facebook group will have similar content.

Partnership With Schools:

In an attempt to get the young ones involved in the sport, a partnership with the schools in Innisfail is also in the works.

Membership

What you get:

Members of Innisfail Nordic will get

  • Exclusive use of the track set terrain
  • Free waxing clinics
  • Access to Social nights, including an after ski beer at a local pub! (we are working to get a discount).

What it will cost:

Innisfail Nordic is a not for profit organization, but because we will have operating costs like gas and maintenance for the snowmobile, we will have an annual membership fee. Insurance will also cost the club 12$ per adult and 7$ per student, so your membership will also cover that cost. A definite membership fee has not been worked out yet, but we can expect to be in the range of 30$ to 35$ for a full season adult membership, around 20$ for teens and 10$ for children 12 and under. There will also be a family discount. A definite amount will be worked out closer to ski season.

What we still NEED

Members:

We need you! There will be a membership meeting sometime in early November, with a date and time TBA. We hope to sign up  a lot of eager skiers so we can make this club great! Look for our ad in the Innisfail paper and tell your friends to respond to the ad if they are interested. The meeting will be advertised once we have a date and time, but email invitations will also be sent out, so if you know anyone who might be interested, please forward their email to the info at the bottom of the Newsletter.

Board Members/Voluteers:

As I am not a one man show, I will need some help running this club! So that means we need a few folks to sign up to be board members of the Innisfail Nordic Ski Club. We will need a treasurer, secretary and anybody else that wants to sit on the board who really wants to help out! We will also need several volunteers for things like track setting. We will talk more about this at our first meeting.

Snowmobile:

We still really need something to pull our tracksetters, because I don’t feel like I want to tie a rope around my waste and drag that things around all winter. We need some horse power! We aren’t looking for anything  fancy, we just need something. Ideally we would have a double track snowmobile with a single ski at the front, but we aren’t picky. If you or someone you know has an old snowmobile sitting around getting rusty that the club could use, or if you have one for a reasonable price that the club could buy, please contact me at the information below. We will also need a place to store the snowmobile and track setter, once we have both in our possession.

Sponsors:

Innisfail Nordic is accepting any sponsorships to help with club expenses. Sponsors will be featured on the club website. For sponsorship opportunities, please contact me at the information below. We are also accepting any items you want to donate for our fund raising raffle, which will feature a free one year membership at Innisfail Nordic, as well as several other great prizes!

Meeting

Again, we will be having our first ever meeting within the next few weeks. Check the Innisfail newspaper, the website, the facebook group and your email for more information. The meeting will likely be on a Sunday afternoon/evening at a date time and location TBA. Possible dates include Sunday November 2nd, or Sunday November 9th. The meeting will cover any information pertaining to membership, volunteer opportunities and sponsorship. There will also be a member sign up and a raffle.

Thank you again for showing interest in the ALL NEW club! I am really excited about all of this, and I hope you are too. There will be more news to come! See you at the meeting!

Sincerely,

Bryce Willigar

The first steps in getting the club organized will be to drum up some interest around town. Check out some locations around town that will have a club interest sign up form. Check out the bulletin board in the Co-op mall and Chinook's Centre School. More locations to come. You can also show your interest by signing up under the I'm Interested tab, or by visiting the Innisfail Nordic Facebook page and leaving a comment, or simply like the page. Once we have a better idea of who would like to get involved in the club, we can go forward from there.
